New Hiker Accommodation on El Camino de Costa Rica: Casa Tamandúa (Bungalows, Camping, Dining)

We celebrate the opening of Casa Tamandúa, a new lodge that reflects Urritrek’s growth and our commitment to better, more meaningful experiences for hikers on El Camino de Costa Rica.

This project represents more than just a roof and four walls. Casa Tamandúa is a response to a very real need: a reliable, comfortable, and well-situated place to rest at the beginning of Stage 2 of the trail, where no nearby lodging options existed before.

By creating this space, Urritrek not only makes logistics easier but also enriches the experience of travelers who wish to immerse themselves in the landscapes, culture, and magic of Costa Rica’s Caribbean foothills.

Inspiration from the Camino de Santiago

The idea of Casa Tamandúa draws inspiration from Spain’s Camino de Santiago, where pilgrims often found such comfort in their hostels and albergues that they would return time and again, not just for necessity, but for the sense of community.

Similarly, Casa Tamandúa is designed to become more than a stopover. We envision it as a warm, welcoming home for adventurers, one that blends functionality with authenticity and leaves a mark on each traveler’s memory.

Where Is Casa Tamandúa?

Casa Tamandúa is located in Cimarrones, at the very start of Stage 2 of El Camino de Costa Rica, just off Route 32. From here, hikers cross a pedestrian bridge and begin their climb toward the mountain community of Las Brisas.

The spot is both practical and strategic: 100 meters away sits the local health center (EBAIS de Cimarrones), ensuring peace of mind in case of emergencies. And because this is the last flat point before the first significant ascent of the stage, it is the perfect place to rest, recover, and prepare for the challenge ahead.

Though the Caribbean coast is often associated with banana plantations, Casa Tamandúa lies in a transitional zone between the lowland plains and the rising Caribbean mountains. At just 50 meters above sea level, the house offers sweeping views of the coastal flatlands, while already feeling the fresh air of higher altitudes.

A refuge in Nature

The area around Casa Tamandúa is rich in wildlife. Guests can often spot toucans, sloths, and great green macaws, and the abundance of frogs adds both charm and a touch of magic to the environment. For many, these encounters become highlights of their journey, reminding them of the biodiversity that makes Costa Rica such a unique destination.

Why “Tamandúa”?

The name Tamandúa may sound unusual to Spanish speakers, but it carries a rich natural and linguistic legacy. In Portuguese, the word tamanduá—borrowed from the indigenous Tupi–Guaraní language; literally means "ant catcher (from taa “ant” + mondé “to catch”).

This term refers specifically to the lesser anteater, a semi-arboreal species smaller than its better-known relative, the giant anteater.

At Urritrek, the name reflects more than just a mascot. “Urri” honors the giant anteater, a species emblematic of transformation and resilience.

By naming our lodge Casa Tamandúa, we establish a symbolic bridge between the two anteater species, both embodiments of curiosity, careful exploration, and ecological harmony.

Just as the tamandúa moves through the forest with intentional grace, climbing, foraging methodically, and adapting to its environment, Casa Tamandúa is designed to be a thoughtful, deliberate stop along El Camino de Costa Rica. It offers shelter without distraction and hospitality infused with purpose, guided by a shared spirit of preservation, slowing down, and respecting the natural world. In this way, our lodge is not merely a place to stay, but a living metaphor for sustainable adventure.

Lodging for Every Traveler

Casa Tamandúa officially opened its doors in September 2025. While it was created first and foremost for those walking El Camino de Costa Rica, it also welcomes independent travelers exploring the region or simply looking for a peaceful place to stay.

Its mission is inclusivity and accessibility. Before Casa Tamandúa, the nearest accommodation required detours by car, adding unnecessary costs and complications for hikers. Now, the path is more straightforward, and travelers can focus on the journey itself.

More than lodging: A community space

Casa Tamandúa is also meant to be a place of encounter and exchange. Hikers from different countries can share stories over a meal, connect with local culture, and experience firsthand the hospitality of Costa Rica’s rural communities.

In this way, the house contributes not only to the comfort of hikers but also to the broader mission of El Camino de Costa Rica: connecting travelers with the landscapes, people, and traditions that make this country unique.

Looking ahead

Casa Tamandúa marks an essential step in Urritrek’s growth, but it is also part of a longer journey. Our goal is to continue evolving, innovating, and creating meaningful experiences along El Camino de Costa Rica.

We know that being “green” and sustainable is not a destination, but a process. With every project, from the smallest campsite to our most significant partnerships, we move closer to a vision of tourism that respects both nature and culture.

Final reminder: The magic of El Camino

Costa Rica is a country of astonishing biodiversity, landscapes, and cultural richness. El Camino de Costa Rica is one of the best ways to experience it. Walking across the country from coast to coast allows travelers to immerse themselves in rainforests, mountains, and villages that most tourists never see.

With Casa Tamandúa, we are proud to make this journey more accessible, more comfortable, and more memorable. And we are committed to continuing to grow, offering better facilities, stronger connections with local communities, and unforgettable moments for every traveler.

The road ahead is long, but full of promise. And like every step on El Camino, Casa Tamandúa is both a milestone and an invitation to keep moving forward. Get a quote and begin your experience
